Rediscover Paris differently, a weekend without tourists at a low price

Paris in summer can quickly turn into a bustling tourist hub, especially around the great classics like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, or Montmartre. However, it’s entirely possible to fully enjoy a Parisian summer weekend without getting lost in the crowd. Here’s an itinerary and some budget-friendly activities to enjoy your weekend without breaking the bank.

Day 1: Peaceful strolls on the Left Bank

Morning – Walk in the hidden 5th arrondissement
Avoid the hustle and bustle of the Panthéon and the Luxembourg Gardens by heading to Rue Mouffetard, but on the market side, early in the morning. You’ll encounter locals there doing their shopping. Enjoy a coffee on a terrace in one of the small side streets, away from the main thoroughfares.

Next, climb to the Arènes de Lutèce, a peaceful, often overlooked Gallo-Roman amphitheater. A perfect place to sit with a book in the shade.

Lunch – Lunch on the terrace in Butte-aux-Cailles
This neighborhood in the 13th arrondissement retains a village feel. With its cobbled streets, discreet street art, and small family restaurants, it’s perfect for a lunch away from the crowds. Try a bistro on the rue de la Butte-aux-Cailles.

Afternoon – Relaxing in Montsouris Park
Less touristy than Parc Monceau or the Tuileries, Parc Montsouris is a haven of peace. Bring a blanket and a good book or explore the shaded paths. For photography enthusiasts, the play of light on the ponds and the botanical diversity are a delight.

Evening – Dinner and natural wine in the 11th arrondissement
Head to the 11th arrondissement, between Charonne and Saint-Maur, where small natural wine bars and seasonal restaurants abound. Book at Septime La Cave or Le Grand Bain for a relaxed, local dining experience.

Day 2: The other face of northern Paris

Morning – Canal de l’Ourcq and bike ride
Far from the hustle and bustle of the Canal Saint-Martin, rent a bike and cycle along the Canal de l’Ourcq from La Villette. Sunday mornings are quiet, ideal for cycling to Parc de la Bergère in Bobigny, or even further. Take a coffee break by the water in Pantin at one of the summer open-air cafés, such as Pavillon des Canaux.

Noon – Picnic at the Butte du Chapeau-Rouge park
This little-known park in the 19th arrondissement offers panoramic views of eastern Paris. Peaceful, green, and uncrowded, it’s perfect for a simple picnic with bread, cheese, and a few cherries purchased along the way.

Afternoon – Unusual visit or alternative art gallery
Try an original guided tour with a local guide (like Parisien d’un Jour) or explore a gallery in the Belleville district, such as the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac. More frequented by art lovers than tourists.

Evening – Alternative cruise on the Seine or open-air cinema
Rather than the classic riverboats, book an aperitif cruise with Les Canotiers or Marin d’Eau Douce. And if you prefer to stay on land, many open-air cinemas open in the summer, notably at Parc de la Villette or La Recyclerie (18th).
